Adam graduated from the University of Alberta in 2004 with a Psychology major. Woo hoo, right? What do you do with a Psychology major, aside from keep going to school? Well, it turns out you have a few options.
A brief history
After he finished his degree, Adam got a job with a utility company. Officially hired as a “technical writer” (which doesn’t mean what it sounds like), it became clear that there wasn’t enough writing to keep him occupied on a full-time basis. This is when he made the fatal error of asking for more work. So they handed him the IT budget.
“What do I do with this?” he asked.
“Analyze it,” they said.
And so he did. Every month for a year. Until he got another job with an affiliated company… doing essentially the same thing. Except this time, with the buildings & furniture budget.
Throughout all of this time, Adam has done freelance writing on the side. First for a few local publications, and then for a design company that needed a copywriter. That lasted about half a year. It didn’t take, mostly because the day job (remember: budgets!) kind of got in the way.
However, Adam has since found a balance in his life that has enabled him to partake in a few side-projects (if he plays his cards right, these side-projects will become his day job, and soon he’ll be doing furniture and IT budgets on the side, just for fun):
- He founded his own consulting company in July 2007 to handle his freelance design and marketing work. It’s called Hot Lettuce Consulting, and should have a web presence in Q1 2008.
- He’s part-owner of a soon-to-be-launched software venture.
- He’s full owner of a grey cat with far too many toes.
So you see, things aren’t so bad for Adam. He finds time to watch episodes of Scrubs and Arrested Development, spend time with his fantastic girlfriend (and her little dog, too!) and sleep.
Well, sleep sometimes, anyhow.
